Orlando Bloom Back for The Hobbit?

When one the billion dollar franchise that is Pirates of the Caribbean writes you out the fourth movie, what else do you do? Go back to the other billion dollar franchise of course! Deadline have news that as well as Cate Blanchett coming back to the movie, Orlando Bloom is also close to signing a contract to reprise his role as Legolas, the Elven archer – and therefore sell many more posters!

They also report that his role will be ‘far more than a cameo’. They go on to say that Ian McKellen (Gandalf), Andy Serkis (Gollum) and Hugo Weaving (Elrond) who’s characters all feature in the book, have yet to be cast but I expect we’ll see a few more announcements in the coming weeks/months.

We’ll confirm, this if / when it happens.

  1. Bilbo did spend several days hanging around his court and saw plenty of his father and his servants if I remember rightly (I might not do); taken as one story it in retrospect seems bizarre according to standard dramatic practice that Legolas didn’t come into it and he and Bilbo didn’t recognise each other in Rivendell; one would expect his absence to be retroactively explained by him being on some campaign or training somewhere – but of course, it’s obvious that the character was formed for the Lord of the Rings, post-Hobbit. If it’a wished to expand the story and allow it to tie in more logically with LotR this at least is an acceptable way of doing so. But Galadriel, now there one would have to work in some serious and potentially very silly-seeming deviation to give her a cameo.
