San Francisco held host to a special charity screening of Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master this week, and a rather brilliant new poster was spotted at the 70mm special presentation.

Philip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix star opposite each other in the leads, and early reviews from the film have been expectedly promising.

“Written and directed by Academy Award nominee Paul Thomas Anderson (the acclaimed director of, There Will Be Blood, Magnolia and Boogie Nights), this story stars Academy Award winner Philip Seymour Hoffman (Capote) and Academy Award-nominee Joaquin Phoenix (Walk the Line). Set in America in the years following World War II, a charismatic intellectual (Hoffman) launches a faith-based organization and taps a young drifter (Phoenix) as his right-hand man. But as the faith begins to gain a fervent following, the one time vagabond finds himself questioning the belief system he has embraced, and his mentor. A truly one-of-a-kind drama, which promises magnetic virtuoso performances, the film marks the fifth collaboration between Anderson and Hoffman, following Hard Eight, Boogie Nights, Magnolia, and Punch Drunk Love.”

Anderson is directing from his own script, with Amy Adams, Laura Dern, Jesse Plemons, and David Warshovsky completing the cast nicely, and Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood (There Will Be Blood, Magnolia) composing the score.

The Master will be heading to Venice and Toronto in the coming weeks, before a limited US release on 14th September, opening wide on the 21st September. It will then head to our shores on 9th November, and we can’t wait to see how it unfolds. The film is likely be a contender in the coming awards season, and is a must-see when it arrives. For now, enjoy this great new poster, which you can click to enlarge.
