Here’s the first official look at Gerard Butler in his leading role in the film Machine Gun Preacher, the forthcoming biopic of Sam Childers, a former gang biker who found God and travelled to the Sudan to rescue children forced to become soldiers.

Marc Forster directs Butler in a role which may do wonders for the actor who has vacillated between musclebound heroes and tall, dark and romcom and he will be supported by Michelle Monaghan, Michael Shannon and Madeline Caroll among others.

It’s an inspiring story and Forster, who is knee deep in zombies at the moment filming his adaptation of Max Brooks’ World War Z with Brad Pitt, has a nicely eclectic filmography and knows how to get the best out of his leading players without turning each into A Film Starring…

Although looking at a picture of the man himself how Kiefer Sutherland got overlooked is a mystery.

If you’re keen to know more here’s a couple of interviews with the man himself, first is your average news interview and the second clip is an extended trailer for Sebastian Roche’s forthcoming documentary on the man and his work. The second video is, understandably given the nature of the subject matter, pretty harrowing.
