Pete Travis’ Dredd 3D is just a few weeks away from hitting the big screen, and after debuting at Comic-Con to brilliant first reviews, the anticipation is naturally set to high.

We got a great new poster for the film earlier this month, and now a new featurette has gone online over at Yahoo Movies, taking us behind the scenes, giving us a bit of background information on the character for the newly initiated.

“DREDD takes us to the wild streets of Mega City One, the lone oasis of quasi-civilization on Cursed Earth. Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) is the most feared of elite Street Judges, with the power to enforce the law, sentence offenders and execute them on the spot – if necessary. The endlessly inventive mind of writer Alex Garland and the frenetic vision of director Peter Travis bring DREDD to life as a futuristic neo-noir action film that returns the celebrated character to the dark, visceral incarnation from John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra’s revered comic strip.”

Karl Urban takes the lead as the eponymous Judge Dredd, with Olivia Thirlby starring opposite him as Judge Anderson, and Lena Headey as the antagonist, Ma-Ma, with Domhnall Gleeson, Wood Harris, and Jason Cope completing the supporting cast.

Travis is directing a script from Alex Garland (28 Days Later, The Beach), based on the original 2000 AD comic book character, and all signs suggest we’re in for a very different take on the original material to the Stallone film.

There’s already been talk of potentially turning the film into a trilogy, so when it hits the big screen next month, be sure to go see it as soon as possible if you want to see Urban return for another two rounds.

Dredd 3D will be released on 7th September here in the UK, followed by a 21st September release in the US. I can’t wait. This looks awesome.
