Disney has released the debut teaser trailer for its highly anticipated live-action adaptation of ‘Moana,’ offering the first breathtaking glimpse into a bold new reimagining of the beloved 2016 animated classic. The film stars newcomer Catherine Lagaʻaia as Moana, with Dwayne Johnson returning to reprise his fan-favourite role as the legendary trickster demigod Maui.
The trailer immerses viewers in the lush, expansive world of Motunui, beautifully brought to life through sweeping ocean vistas, rich cultural textures and a vibrant sense of community. Audiences are introduced to the shapeshifting Maui, the ferociously adorable Kakamora, and Moana herself—seen stepping into destiny as a wayfinder. In a powerful, spine-tingling moment, Lagaʻaia sings the iconic line: “I Am Moana.”
Joining Lagaʻaia and Johnson is a stellar cast deeply rooted in the Pacific. John Tui, from Auckland, New Zealand, portrays Moana’s steadfast father, Chief Tui. Frankie Adams, the Samoan–New Zealander star known for her strength and charisma, brings warmth and determination to the role of Moana’s mother, Sina. Rena Owen, from the Bay of Islands, New Zealand, plays the wise and beloved Gramma Tala, the keeper of Motunui’s ancestral stories.
The live-action adaptation charts Moana’s first voyage beyond the reef as she answers the Ocean’s call, embarking on a daring journey across uncharted seas with the larger-than-life Maui. Together, they set out to restore balance and prosperity to her people in an adventure that blends myth, music and heart.
Directed by Emmy® and Tony Award® winner Thomas Kail (Hamilton), the film is produced by Dwayne Johnson, Dany Garcia, Beau Flynn, Hiram Garcia, and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
