Star-Trek-Into-Darkness-Poster-UKHaving arrived in UK theatres last weekend, J.J. Abrams’ anticipated blockbuster sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness, has now officially been released into the US multiplex, and is reportedly on track for a nine-figure four-day opening across the Atlantic.

The early reviews and the reception from our audiences have been very positive – you can read our review here – and we’re looking forward to seeing how it fares at the box office in the States this weekend.

Adding to all the brilliant things we’ve seen from the film already, Paramount have released a new music featurette in which composer Michael Giacchino talks a little about scoring Abrams’ blockbuster.

When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction.

As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Benedict Cumberbatch, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Zoe Saldana, John Cho, Anton Yelchin, Alice Eve, Bruce Greenwood, and Noel Clarke all lead another brilliant ensemble.

Abrams is directing from a script penned by co-writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman (Star Trek, Transformers) and Damon Lindelof (Prometheus).

Giacchino is responsible for scoring some of the biggest films in recent years, including the most recent two instalments in the Mission: Impossible franchise, Abrams’ Star Trek reboot and Super 8, and Pixar’s Up and Cars 2. And with Jupiter Ascending and Tomorrowland both on his upcoming slate, we can look forward to plenty more awesome scores from the composer following his work on Star Trek Into Darkness.

Star Trek Into Darkness is now playing in 3D and IMAX 3D in the US and UK, and is set to top the US box office this weekend.
