Netflix is heading deep into the shadowy forests of upstate New York, with Maya Hawke set to star in its upcoming limited series ‘The God of the Woods,’ based on the acclaimed novel by Liz Moore.
Hawke will take on the role of Judy Luptack, a sharp and quietly determined investigator navigating a world that would rather she stay on the sidelines. As the first female investigator in the Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Judy is tasked with solving the disappearance of a young girl from a summer camp in the Adirondacks, a case that quickly reveals itself to be anything but straightforward.
The series is described as a multi-generational drama set against the dense, whispering backdrop of the Adirondack wilderness. At its centre lies the powerful Van Laar family, whose legacy begins to fracture following the disappearance of 13-year-old Barbara Van Laar. The case echoes an earlier tragedy within the family, hinting at buried secrets that refuse to stay buried.

As timelines blur and long-held truths begin to surface, the story explores class tensions, inherited power, and the corrosive effects of privilege. The Van Laars’ carefully constructed world begins to splinter, revealing a darker ecosystem beneath the polished exterior.
Moore co-writes the adaptation alongside Liz Hannah, with both serving as co-showrunners and executive producers. The project brings together an experienced production team, including Neal H. Moritz and Pavun Shetty, who executive produce under the Original Film banner.
Sony Pictures Television is attached as the studio behind the series.
