The ‘House of the Dragon’ and ‘Doctor Who’ star, Matt Smith, has officially joined the cast of ‘Star Wars: Starfighter,’ the upcoming standalone feature from director Shawn Levy (Free Guy, The Adam Project) for Lucasfilm.

Sources close to the actor confirm that Smith will portray a key villain in the film, taking on a major role opposite previously announced stars Ryan Gosling and Mia Goth.

‘Star Wars: Starfighter’ is set to begin filming this fall, with a theatrical release date scheduled for May 28, 2027.

Scripted by Jonathan Tropper (This Is Where I Leave You, The Adam Project), the new instalment in the ‘Star Wars’ franchise is set approximately five years after the events of ‘Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker,’ and will introduce a slate of new characters to the beloved universe. While specific plot details remain under wraps, the film is said to expand the mythology beyond the Skywalker saga, serving as a fresh narrative launch point for future stories in the ‘Star Wars’ timeline.

Smith’s casting adds further gravitas to the already high-profile project, with his proven ability to bring depth and complexity to darker roles. It marks the Emmy-nominated actor’s most high-profile franchise role since his appearances in ‘Doctor Who,’ ‘Morbius,’ and HBO’s ‘House of the Dragon.’
