To celebrate the release of the long-mooted remake of Red Sonja, we had the pleasure of chatting to the titular hero herself, Matilda Lutz, to find out more.
In this reimagining of the classic sword-and-sorcery tale, Red Sonja (Matilda Lutz) embarks on a perilous journey to avenge her family’s murder and confront the tyrannical forces threatening her world. Alongside a diverse group of allies, she must navigate treacherous landscapes and battle formidable foes to restore justice and reclaim her destiny.
Chatting with Lutz, we talk about taking on the legendary role of Red Sonja in the highly anticipated 2025 reboot. From gruelling stunt training to bringing emotional depth to a sword-and-sorcery icon, Matilda shares behind-the-scenes stories, the challenges of action filmmaking, and what fans can expect from this bold new take on the beloved comic book heroine. We also discuss director MJ Bassett’s “obsession” with the character and how much the 1980s film, starring Brigitte Nielsen and Arnold Schwarzenegger, influenced the remake.
