Joss Whedon – Serenity

Joss Whedon

Joss Whedon has officially and permanently lodged himself in the affections of fans of cult TV off the back of Buffy, Angel and Firefly. With Serenity and The Avengers he has proven himself just as impressive a wielder of big-screen resources and anticipation and expectations are now sky-high for Age of Ultron.

So much of his pre-Avengers output is great, it’s hard to know where to point, but we’ll go with Serenity, simply because it shows, before The Avengers did, that Whedon can balance large casts, that he can alloy emotional heft and dramatic stakes to a witty script and that some of the more outlandish elements that can come with sci-fi can still feel down to Earth if you can get the tone right.

Serenity is a thing of beauty – thrilling, hilarious, weighty, fan-pleasing, moving and accessible. Before he got it all right for The Avengers, Whedon got it all right here.

Dave has been writing for HeyUGuys since mid-2010 and has found them to be the most intelligent, friendly, erudite and insightful bunch of film fans you could hope to work with. He's gone from ham-fisted attempts at writing the news to interviewing Lawrence Bender, Renny Harlin and Julian Glover, to writing articles about things he loves that people have actually read. He has fairly broad tastes as far as films are concerned, though given the choice he's likely to go for Con Air over Battleship Potemkin most days. He's pretty sure that 2001: A Space Odyssey is the most overrated mess in cinematic history.
