Netflix don’t tend to put out bad series, which gives us hope for their new original production The Alienist, starring Daniel Bruhl, Dakota Fanning and Luke Evans. Launching this week, to get you excited we sat down with Welsh actor Luke Evans to discuss his role in this creative project.

We asked about the role of John Moore, and how he fits into this world. Evans also speaks about the meticulous attention to detail on the set and how he became absorbed in between takes. He also speaks about the absurd notion of an ‘Alienist’ – a term to describe those who studied, and dedicated their profession to mental health. We then went on to speak about the power of TV and how incredible an art-form it is nowadays, while back to the cinema we asked about his forthcoming collaboration with Luc Besson in Anna. Evans says that if ‘Leon and Nikita had a baby, it would be Anna’. Consider us intrigued.

Synopsis

The best-selling book by Caleb Carr is the basis for “The Alienist,” a psychological thriller set amidst the vast wealth, extreme poverty and technological innovation of 1896 New York. A never-before-seen ritualistic killer is responsible for the gruesome murders of boy prostitutes, and newly appointed police commissioner Theodore Roosevelt calls upon criminal psychologist Dr. Laszlo Kreizler, newspaper illustrator John Moore and police department secretary Sara Howard to conduct the investigation in secret. The brilliant, obsessive Kreizler is known as an alienist — one who studies mental pathologies and the deviant behaviours of those who are alienated from themselves and society. His job, along with his controversial views, makes him a social pariah in some circles. But helped by a band of outsiders, Kreizler’s tireless efforts eventually answer the question behind what makes a man into a murderer.

The Alienist launches on Netflix on April 19th.
