The Critics Circle Awards

The 34th annual Critics Circle Film wards took place in London earlier this evening and going into the evening Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave looked to be the favourite with nine nominations.

Another film with a strong presence tonight was Philomena, with Judi Dench up for Best Actress (as well as Best British Actress…) and Steve Coogan up for both acting and screenwriting awards. Filth, a notable absence from the recent BAFTA nods, was well represented too and serves to remind us that the UK and US academies can be narrow in their collective assessment.
