Len Wiseman, creator of the moderately successful Underworld series, is in advanced talks to direct a Total Recall remake. The film, originally released in 1990, is tentatively based on a short story by Philip K. Dick called We Can Remember It For You Wholesale.

Columbia Pictures’ presidents, Doug Belgrad and Matt Tolmach, announced the remake in a press release earlier today, also revealing that Kurt Wimmer has been hired to write the script, with a release date set for sometime in 2011. Original Film will produce.

Neal H. Moritz, frontrunner of Original Film productions, said of the possible collaboration with Wiseman, “I have been trying for years to work with Len and fortunately we finally found a great project that he loves as much as we do. Len is terrifically talented and we know he is the right director to re-imagine Total Recall for a new generation of fans.”

Wiseman is said to be “fascinated with Philip K. Dick’s short story, and I’m excited at that prospect of diving even deeper into the type of world it evokes and the questions it asks.” It’s quite easy to see how he’d be a fit for a project like Total Recall. I only hope it fairs better than the recent two instalments of the Underworld franchise.

Expect more details to be revealed when the film enters production.
