Cyrus Voris and Ethan Reiff, who co-wrote Dreamworks’ 2008 animation film Kung Fu Panda, have been hired by Columbia Pictures to pen the sequel to The Karate Kid.

Directed by Harald Zwart, The Karate Kid starred Jaden Smith, Taraji P. Henson and Jackie Chan. They are all expected to return for the sequel.

The Karate Kid, a remake of the 1984 original, was released in June and has since grossed 0M at the worldwide box office. The film was made for an estimated M. It’s no surprise, then, that Columbia are prepping a sequel.

Will Smith’s Overbrook Entertainment will produce the sequel. It is unclear whether Harald Zwart will return to direct.

THR reported this one.
