Kate Winslet is reportedly in talks to star in ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum,’ the upcoming instalment in the beloved fantasy franchise.

The film will be directed by Andy Serkis, who will also reprise his iconic performance as Gollum, the tormented creature he first brought to life in the original ‘The Lord of the Rings’ trilogy. The project is being developed by Warner Bros. as part of a new wave of stories set in the world created by J. R. R. Tolkien.

Although the studio has yet to confirm the full cast, longtime franchise stars Elijah Wood and Ian McKellen are rumoured to return as Frodo Baggins and Gandalf. Their potential involvement would further connect the new film to the original cinematic saga that captivated audiences in the early 2000s.

Behind the camera, the film reunites key creative forces from the franchise. Peter Jackson, who directed the original trilogy and ‘The Hobbit’ films, is producing alongside his longtime collaborators Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens.

Plot details remain tightly under wraps, but the story is reportedly set between the events of ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.’ The film is expected to explore the hunt for Gollum referenced in Tolkien’s lore, a mission that took place before the Fellowship set out from Rivendell.

If the deal is finalised, the project would mark a reunion between Winslet and Jackson. The Oscar-winning actress previously worked with the director on the critically acclaimed 1994 drama Heavenly Creatures.

‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’ is currently scheduled to arrive in cinemas on December 17, 2027.
