To celebrate the release of Fast 9, which is out now in UK cinemas, we sat down with the film’s director and co-writer Justin Lin to find out about the long-delayed record-breaking sequel.

Delayed for over a year due to the pandemic, audiences have been chomping at the bit to get their hands – and eyes – on the ninth installment, which certainly doesn’t hold back on the action. Feats of unimaginable madness ensue as Dom (Vin Diesel) and his team/family as they confront Dom’s past in ways they weren’t expecting.

Directing a sequel is hard enough but to do it for the fifth time but Lin seemed thrilled to return and spoke to us about directing another installment, keeping the story relevant and the action set-pieces as much a combination of practical stunts and CGI as possible and how the family dynamic on-screen has bled into people’s real families. We also asked him about directing the Fast “stare” moments, particularly between Diesel and John Cena, which is a skill all to itself…

Vin Diesel’s Dom Toretto is leading a quiet life off the grid with Letty and his son, little Brian, but they know that danger always lurks just over their peaceful horizon. This time, that threat will force Dom to confront the sins of his past if he’s going to save those he loves most. His crew joins together to stop a world-shattering plot led by the most skilled assassin and high-performance driver they’ve ever encountered: a man who also happens to be Dom’s forsaken brother, Jakob (John Cena, the upcoming The Suicide Squad).
