We are set to get a new buddy-cop film from Universal Pictures with the news that two of Hollywood’s funniest men are set to team up to take on some bad guys.

Universal has purchased the new project which is set to be helmed by Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) and produced by David Bernad and Murray Miller, the producers behind upcoming films Brad’s Status, starring Ben Stiller, and Unicorn Store, the directorial debut of Oscar Winner Brie Larson. Miller is also writing the script.

As part of the package for the project, both John Cena (Trainwreck, Daddy’s Home 2) and Kumail Nanjiani (The Big Sick) are attached to star in the film as the buddy cops in question. Both stars have had some decent hits over the last year or two and are set to become the latest comedy-duo to team up for the film which could start production soon. As well as Daddy’s Home 2, Cena is currently filming the Bumblebee Transformers spin-off and could be involved in DC/Warner Bros’ adaptation of Shazam!

Nanjiani has had a fantastic year with The Big Sick becoming one of the biggest hits of the year and possible awards season buzz still ongoing. He will be seen later this year in Killing Gunther, the directorial debut of SNL’s Taran Killam which stars Arnold Schwarzenegger in the title role.

Fleischer, too, has been a busy man over the last few years, with work as varied as Santa Clarita Diet, Gangster Squad and TV movie Spaced Out. And soon he begins filming on Venom, the Sony Pictures/Marvel spin-off film which tells the story of famous Spider-Man villain Venom aka Eddie Brock, played in the film by Tom Hardy (The Dark Knight Rises, The Revenant). Riz Ahmed (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) is also reportedly set to be part of the film.
