Despite his last feature (Twelve) receiving a critical mauling and his film before that (occult neo-nazi mash-up, Town Creek) limping out into DTV territory, the movie gods still appear to be smiling down on Joel Schumacher.

Variety are reporting that the Batman and Robin auteur is down to direct a film called The Hive. Little else is mentioned except that it’s being billed as a “suspense thriller” about a emergency operator who must confront a killer from her past to save a young girl’s life.

Schumacher it somewhat of a Hollywood survivor and has always been able to roll with the punches. On occasion he has produced some surprisingly solid work (Tigerland is a glowing example of this) but more often than not, has been handicapped by below-par material in the first place (did anyone seriously think they could weave a fascinating yarn out of the script for The Number 23?!).

Let’s hope he’s found something here which is more in line with 2002’s Phone Booth.
