Jodie Foster has joined the cast of the Netflix biopic on marathon swimmer Diana Nyad, ‘Nyad.’

Foster joins Annette Bening who takes on the role of Nyad. Foster will play Bonnie Stoll, her coach and longtime friend.

At the age of 64, in 2013, Nyad, a long-distance swimmer became the first person to swim the 110-mile distance from Cuba to Florida without the aid of a shark cage. It was her fifth attempt, and she executed it by undertaking a 53-hour journey through the dangerous open ocean that included overcoming not just sharks but poisonous jellyfish.

Documentary filmmakers Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin – who won an Oscar for the doc ‘Free Solo’ – will be making their feature directorial debut on the project.

Andrew Lazar and Teddy Schwarzman will produce the project. Mad Chance brought it to Black Bear Pictures who developed and packed. Ann Biderman and Black List writer Julia Cox penned the script inspired by Nyad’s autobiography, ‘Find a Way.’

Foster was last seen opposite Benedict Cumberbatch in Kevin MacDonald’s real-life drama ‘The Mauritanian.’
