Earlier this year, Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn was said to be in talks to helm The Bringing for Sony Pictures, but he would leave the project shortly after. However, the studio has now lined up another filmmaker in the form of Jeremy Lovering. He’s best known for 2013 horror movie In Fear.

Scripted by Brandon and Phillip Murphy, The Bringing is based on actual events. It focuses on Elisa Lam, a woman who was found dead in the water tanks on the roof of the infamous Cecil Hotel in Los Angeles.

A viral video of the woman acting very strangely in an elevator moments before her death led to a lot of online speculation that there was a supernatural element to what happened to her, especially as she had no history of mental illness and no drugs or alcohol were found in her system when an autopsy was performed.

Her body wasn’t discovered until two weeks later when hotel guests complained about the taste and colour of the water. The Cecil Hotel has a sinister background due to the fact that killers like Richard Ramirez have called it home at one time or another, and a number of suicides have occurred there as well.

The Bringing will apparently revolve around the man who investigates a strange death at the hotel and subsequently finds himself stumbling into a nightmare as the truth is revealed.

Lovering also helmed the series three opener for Sherlock, “The Empty Hearse”.
