Jason Segel helped Disney relaunch The Muppets franchise a few years back (though the sequel crashed and burned without him), and he’s now taking aim at one of the many planned spinoffs of The LEGO Movie.

Joining him will be Iron Man 3 writer Drew Pearce, and together he and Segel will co-write and co-direct.

Titled The Billion Brick Race, there are currently no plot details, but it certainly sounds interesting. It has been revealed that the story is based on an original idea which came from Pearce and insiders say that it “excited” the studio. The Lego Movie brain trust of Phil Lord, Chris Miller, Dan Lin and Roy Lee will produce.

Other planned spinoffs include Ninjago, The LEGO Batman Moive, and The LEGO Movie sequel. There’s currently no release date in place for The Billion Brick Race, but LEGO movies might become a yearly event.

Segel and Pearce will make their directoring debut here, but both men have a wealth of writing experience. The former How I Met Your Mother star penned Forgetting Sarah Marshall, while Pearce also worked on Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation and is attached to one of Sony’s planned Ghostbusters spinoff movies.
