Janelle Monáe has been added to the ever-growing cast of Pharrell Williams’ currently untitled musical project at Universal.

Monáe joins the previously announced cast of  Kelvin Harrison Jr., Halle Bailey, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Oscar nominee Brian Tyree Henry and Missy Elliott on the project.

Said to be a coming-of-age musical set in Virginia Beach in the summer of 1977, inspired by Atlantis Apartments, Williams’ childhood neighbourhood. Bailey will co-star opposite Kelvin Harrison Jr. and join Oscar-winner Da’Vine Joy Randolph in the feature.

Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Science of Sleep) is set to direct the project based on a script by Martin Hynes (Toy Story 4, Magician’s Elephant) and Steven Levenson (Tick, Tick…Boom!, Fosse/Verdon).

Williams and Mimi Valdés will produce through i am OTHER and Gil Netter will produce through Gil Netter Productions.

Monáe’s film credits include ‘Moonlight,’ ‘Lady and the Tramp,’ ‘Harriet,’ ‘The Glorias’ and ‘Antebellum and ‘Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery’.
