Elba takes over from Morgan Freeman who previously starred as Dr. Alex Cross in Kiss the Girls and Along Came A Spider.
Synopsis: Cross centres on a serial rapist who may have murdered his pregnant wife years before.
David Twohy will direct from a screenplay penned by Kerry Williamson. Lloyd Levin, James Patterson, Leopoldo Goutm and Steve Bowen will produce, with shooting expected to commence in Spring 2011.
Cross will be privately financed.
