The Hunger Games is a series of novels, primarily aimed at young adults, that has been phenomenally successful both critically and commercially and a big screen adaptation has been rumoured for some time and now it looks as though some front runners are emerging as favourites to be cast in key roles.

Deadline are reporting that Jennifer Lawrence, star of Winter’s Bone, is the favourite to grab the lead role of Katniss Everdeen. It’s a highly sought after role as the film is expected to be a hit, other actresses in contention are reportedly Abigail Bresling, Hailee Steinfeld and Emily Browning.

I did enjoy Winter’s Bone, perhaps not to the same extent as some but it was certainly a very well acted piece and given the fact that Lawrence was in nearly every scene of the film it certainly showed her in a good light.

Another piece of potential casting news for the project as Entertainment Weekly are reporting that Josh Hutcherson (The Kids Are Alright) has revealed whilst promoting his latest film Detention at SXSW that he’s read the script and is very much keen on landing a key role, in particular Katniss’ closest ally Peeta.

Casting should progress fairly swiftly in the coming weeks as Director Gary Ross and Lionsgate look to get production underway on the series of films that they hope will achieve Twilight like success.

As always; we’ll bring you further news as and when it becomes available. In the meantime; who would be your dream cast?
