Dev Patel, Jack O’Connell, Nicholas Hoult and Daniel Kaluuya are just a handful of actors who burst onto the scene in popular British TV series Skins, each making their mark in Hollywood. The latest to join this illustrious list is Hannah Murray, who stars in Kathryn Bigelow’s powerful drama Detroit.

DetroitMurray – who also has a role in Game of Thrones – plays Julie, one of the victims of the fateful night at the Algiers Motel, that has been excruciatingly brought to life by Bigelow. We asked Murray about the benefits, and challenges, in depicting a real life person – and what it was like having the woman herself on set during the shoot.

We also discuss the golden generation from Skins (which also featured Kaya Scodelario, and Joe Dempsie) and whether Murray got a sense during the making of the TV series that she was surrounded by some of the finest talent to come out of Britain in decades.

Synopsis

In the summer of 1967, rioting and civil unrest starts to tear apart the city of Detroit. Two days later, a report of gunshots prompts the Detroit Police Department, the Michigan State Police and the Michigan Army National Guard to search and seize an annex of the nearby Algiers Motel. Several policemen start to flout procedure by forcefully and viciously interrogating guests to get a confession. By the end of the night, three unarmed men are gunned down while several others are brutally beaten.
