Universal Pictures has released the first teaser trailer for ‘Hamnet,’ the highly anticipated new drama from Academy Award®-winning writer and director Chloé Zhao (Nomadland, Eternals). Opening in cinemas on January 9th, the film explores the untold story that forever changed the course of literary history.
Based on Maggie O’Farrell’s acclaimed novel, ‘Hamnet’ tells the powerful and intimate love story of Agnes Hathaway (played by Jessie Buckley) and William Shakespeare (Paul Mescal) — a bond tested by love, loss, and the echoes of immortality. At its heart lies the inspiration behind one of the greatest works ever written: Hamlet.
The atmospheric first look teases sweeping cinematography and Zhao’s signature lyrical style, with glimpses of Buckley and Mescal’s tender yet fraught relationship, alongside standout appearances from Emily Watson and Joe Alwyn. The teaser hints at themes of grief, resilience, and creativity born from heartbreak, offering audiences a deeply human portrait of the woman and family who shaped a legend.
