Universal Pictures has unveiled a striking new trailer for ‘Hamlet,’ a daring and electrifying reimagining of William Shakespeare’s immortal tragedy that drags the Bard’s most tormented prince into the sharp glare of the present day.
Riz Ahmed, Academy Award winner for ‘The Long Goodbye,’ takes on the iconic title role, bringing a volatile mix of intelligence, fury and vulnerability to the character. The film is directed by Aneil Karia, also an Academy Award winner for ‘The Long Goodbye,’ reuniting the creative duo for a bold contemporary adaptation.
Set within a wealthy British South Asian family, this modern ‘Hamlet’ begins with the prince’s return home for his father’s funeral. His grief quickly turns to disbelief when he learns that his uncle Claudius is set to marry his widowed mother. The situation spirals further when the ghost of Hamlet’s father appears, revealing that Claudius murdered him. From that moment on, Hamlet is consumed by the thirst for revenge, questioning the rot at the heart of the family’s powerful business empire and the stability of his own mind.
Alongside Ahmed, the film boasts an impressive ensemble cast including Morfydd Clark, BAFTA winner for ‘Saint Maude,’ Joe Alwyn, Sheeba Chadha, Avijit Dutt, Art Malik and BAFTA winner Timothy Spall.
