When news hit that Guillermo Del Toro had left The Hobbit, I may have been the only person to breath a sigh of relief. Finally, I thought, now we can see Hellboy 3 before the next ice age. Not so, apparently.

In an interview with MTV, Gillermo Del Toro appeared to indicate that the second sequel to 2004’s Hellboy rested in lead Ron Perlman’s hands.

“Everyone should ask Ron Perlman,” who had voiced concerns with the make-up process at dinner the previous night. “He’s doing Sons of Anarchy without make-up. He’s spoiled! He likes to be the big cheese without the make-up session.”

The film, which Del Toro warned in June might still be some way off, looks set to suffer more delays as a result. Judging from the climax of the second film, there are some dark times ahead for Hellboy and the rest of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense, Del Toro himself indicating that while he knows how it ends, he might not wish to see that ending, “but I would love to do it.” Furthermore, MTV insinuated that this news might come as somewhat of a relief to series creator Mike Mignola

“If Guillermo makes Hellboy 3 and it’s the death of Hellboy, I’m left doing the comic going, ‘but I’m not done yet!’ If Del Toro does my ending, there won’t be a lot of surprise when I get there.”

Asked when that might be, Mignola continued, “It’s going to take me fifteen years…”

15 years! Aw, man!
