Gillian Anderson has jumped on board the third in the ‘Tron’ sci-fi franchise, ‘Tron: Ares.’

Anderson is the latest name to join the likes of Jared Leto, Jodie Turner-Smith (Queen & Slim), and Greta Lee on the cast. Disney confirmed the new instalment will follow Leto as Ares, but details of Anderson’s character and the film’s wider plot are currently under wraps. Ares is a fictional character who crosses over from the world of video games to planet Earth. Evan Peters, Cameron Monaghan, and Sarah Desjardins round out the cast.

‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales’ and ‘Maleficent: Mistress of Evil’ helmer Joachim Rønning takes the director’s chair. Jesse Wigutow and Jack Thorne wrote the script, while Emma Ludbrook, Jeffrey Springer, and Leto are producing, with Russell Allen serving as executive producer.

Having begun life in 1982, the first movie in the franchise featured Jeff Bridges as Kevin Flynn, a video game creator. The movie was praised for its visual effects, but didn’t cut it at the box office. However, it eventually developed a cult following. The sequel, Tron: Legacy, was released in 2010 and starred Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde. The movie made a little over $400M.

Anderson just finished filming on ‘Scoop,’ the feature project based on BBC Newsnight’s bombshell 2019 interview with Prince Andrew about his friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Anderson plays former BBC journalist Emily Maitlis in the feature Anderson also stars alongside Jason Isaacs in the forthcoming feature adaptation of Raynor Winn’s bestselling memoir ‘The Salt Path.’
