To celebrate the release of Mainstream, which is out now on Digital platforms in the UK, we had the pleasure of sitting down with its writer/director Gia Coppola to find out all about it.

Frankie (Maya Hawke) is a young woman at a crossroads, trying to forge her identity and find purpose. Still dealing with the trauma and loss from her father’s death & recognizing that she has been overly sheltered by her mom, Frankie craves to express herself. Frankie teams up to make rebellious art with the charismatic and chaotically exuberant Link (Andrew Garfield). They soon begin a journey that takes them through the highs and lows of fame, popularity, authenticity, narcissism and insecurity in the internet age – ultimately feeding the very monster they are trying to kill.

We spoke to Coppola about what drew her to this story and why it took a long time to bring to the screen, the influences of fairy tales on its narrative, the impact social media is having on modern lives and about her brilliant cast, led by Garfield and Hawke.
