Previously titled Don’t Mess with Texas, Anne Fletcher’s Hot Pursuit sees the director making her first foray into action-comedy territory, with Reese Witherspoon and Modern Family alum Sofía Vergara taking the lead.

The film has some pretty solid potential to be a hit this summer, if it can withstand competition from Avengers: Age of Ultron’s second frame. And with just a few more months until it hits, Warner Bros. has finally launched the first trailer.

In “Hot Pursuit,” an uptight and by-the-book cop (Witherspoon) tries to protect the sexy and outgoing widow (Vergara) of a drug boss as they race through Texas, pursued by crooked cops and murderous gunmen.

Witherspoon and Vergara look to take centre stage throughout, with support from Michael Mosley, John Carroll Lynch, Rob Kazinsky, Richard T. Jones, and Mike Birbiglia.

Fletcher (Step Up) directs from a script by David Feeney (New Girl, 2 Broke Girls) and John Quaintance (Aquamarine, Bad Judge).

Until now, most of Fletcher’s credits have been either romantic comedies (27 Dresses, The Proposal) or romantic dramas (Step Up), with her most recent effort, The Guilt Trip, seeing her do a straight dramatic comedy. Three of her four credits have performed very well at the box office, so I’m keen to see how her first shot at action comedy fares.

Hot Pursuit arrives in US and UK cinemas on 8th May.
