The PossessionProduced by Sam Raimi (The Evil Dead, Spider-Man), The Possession is one of the summer’s main out-and-out horror films, and will be facing tough competition in the final weekend of the summer going head-to-head with [Rec] 3: Genesis.

The first trailer for The Possession has debuted over at Yahoo Movies, giving us our first look at the film, starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Watchmen) and Kyra Sedgwick (Gamer) as increasingly concerned parents of the young Natasha Callis (The Firm).

“Clyde and Stephanie Brenek see little cause for alarm when their youngest daughter Em becomes oddly obsessed with an antique wooden box she purchased at a yard sale. But as Em’s behavior becomes increasingly erratic, the couple fears the presence of a malevolent force in their midst, only to discover that the box was built to contain a dibbuk, a dislocated spirit that inhabits and ultimately devours its human host.”

Directed by Ole Bornedal (Nightwatch), returning with his first English-language film in a decade, directing from a script co-written by frequent collaborators Juliet Snowden and Stiles White (Knowing).

The Possession will be released in the UK and US on 31st August, which (as noted) puts it head-to-head with Paco Plaza’s return to the REC franchise here in the UK, but puts it a week earlier than [REC] 3’s release in the US, where the latter will be released on 7th September. Here’s the first trailer to see what Bornedal has in store for us.
