The first poster and trailer have been released for Jem and the Holograms , G.I. Joe: Retaliation director Jon M Chu’s adaptation of the popular 1980s cartoon. Aubrey Peeples plays Jerrica, the shy girl who takes on the name “Jem” to lead a band which will include Stefanie Scott as Kimber, Hayley Kiyoko as Aja and Aurora Perrineau as Shana. The rest of the cast includes Molly Ringwald, Ryan Guzman, and Juliette Lewis.

In Jem and the Holograms, a a small-town girl catapults from underground video sensation to global superstar, as she and her three sisters begin a one-in-a-million journey of discovering that some talents are too special to keep hidden. According to the movie’s official synopsis, four aspiring musicians will take the world by storm when they see that the key to creating your own destiny lies in finding your own voice.

Chu is no stranger to the world of music after helming Justin Bieber documentary Never Say Never, and it looks like Jem and the Holograms is going to be marketed to a similar audience. As a result, there’s every chance that fans from the ’80s might find that somewhat off-putting, but it’s probably not them who Universal are hoping will make this a hit. Regardless, Jem and the Holograms hits US cinemas on October 23rd and UK 21st December.
