MUBI has unveiled a brand new trailer and artwork for ‘Fatherland,’ the latest film from acclaimed filmmaker Paweł Pawlikowski, director of Ida and Cold War.
The new drama recently had its World Premiere in the Official Competition at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, where Pawlikowski took home the Best Director award ex aequo.
Set against the backdrop of post-war Europe and the height of the Cold War, Fatherland centres on the complicated relationship between Nobel Prize-winning writer Thomas Mann and his daughter Erika, an actress, writer and rally driver.
The film follows the pair during the summer of 1949 as they embark on an emotional and challenging road trip across a Germany still reeling from the devastation of World War II.
Travelling in a black Buick, Thomas and Erika journey from US-dominated Frankfurt to Soviet-controlled Weimar. Thomas is returning home after sixteen years of exile in the United States, but his homecoming forces him to confront more than a divided Germany. He must also reckon with a deep fracture within his own family.
Written by Pawlikowski and Henk Handloegten, ‘Fatherland’ stars Academy Award-nominated actress Sandra Hüller as Erika Mann, following her acclaimed performances in ‘The Zone of Interest’ and ‘Anatomy of a Fall.’ Hanns Zischler plays Thomas Mann, with August Diehl, Devid Striesow and Anna Madeley also starring.
