ParaNorman is shaping up to be one of the best animated films of the year, and I wouldn’t be at all surprised if we find it among the nominees early next year for Best Animated Feature at the Oscars. Along with Pixar’s Brave and Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph, it looks like a very strong contender.

We’ve seen some great things from the film already, and now LAIKA, the studio who brought us Coraline, have released a fantastic new featurette giving us a look behind the scenes of the stop-motion film, and all the hard work that went into creating it.

“The new 3D stop-motion comedy thriller from animation company LAIKA, reteaming the company with Focus Features after the groundbreaking Academy Award-nominated “Coraline.” “ParaNorman” is, following “Coraline,” the company’s second stop-motion animated feature to be made in 3D. In “ParaNorman,” a small town comes under siege by zombies. Who can it call? Only misunderstood local boy Norman (voiced by Kodi Smit-McPhee), who is able to speak with the dead. In addition to the zombies, he’ll have to take on ghosts, witches and, worst, of all, grown-ups, to save his town from a centuries-old curse. But this young ghoul whisperer may find his paranormal activities pushed to their otherworldly limits.”

The voice cast is led by Kodi Smit-McPhee as the eponymous Norman, and he’s joined by the likes of Casey Affleck, Anna Kendrick, John Goodman, Jeff Garlin, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse – an extremely strong cast, I’m sure you’ll agree.

Co-directors Chris Butler and Sam Fell (The Tale of Despereaux) are working from Butler’s script, with Butler making both his writing and directorial debut, and it looks like they’ve done an impressive job of bringing it all alive, with so much credit due to all the people who laboured so hard to make this happen.

ParaNorman will be released in 3D in the US on 17th August, before coming to the UK on 14th September. It looks like it will be nothing short of fantastic, so be sure to commit the date to memory. Here’s a great reason why you should be looking forward to this. Enjoy.
