Though it initially appeared as if Marvel Studios had snared Joaquin Phoenix for the role of the Sorcerer Supreme in Scott Derrickson’s Doctor Strange, he recently dropped out of negotiations (presumably because the prospect of a 6+ picture deal put the picky actor off), putting the studio straight back to square one.

With a director and script in place, not to mention a rumoured 2016 release date, the hunt for someone to play the iconic Marvel character is heating up and the latest name to emerge is Ewan McGregor.

He played Obi-Wan Kenobi in the three Star Wars prequels and has since taken on roles in everything from I Love You Phillip Morris to The Impossible, Jack the Giant Slayer and next year’s Jane Got A Gun.

According to this latest report, sources reveal that the Scottish actor is currently prepping for the role by researching the Doctor Strange character and Marvel are seemingly courting the actor to take on what could potentially be an even bigger franchise role for him than taking on Obi-Wan in Star Wars ever was.

As in the comics, it appears as if they’re looking at actors who are late 30s to early 40s, and McGregor isn’t a bad fit at all. If you’d like to learn more about Doctor Strange, you can do so by clicking right here.
