MetFilm Distribution has released the trailer for the upcoming Welsh-language drama ‘Effi o Blaenau,’ a raw and resonant feature set to arrive in UK cinemas on 19 June 2026.

Directed by Marc Evans, known for ‘Mr Burton’, the film follows Effi, a young woman trapped in a town where opportunity has long since packed its bags. The pubs are shuttered, jobs are scarce, and survival often means long nights and longer compromises. Effi’s grandmother, working tirelessly in a local chip shop, embodies that quiet endurance.

A fleeting spark appears when Effi meets Lee, an injured soldier, during a chance encounter in a Llandudno nightclub. For a brief moment, life glimmers with possibility. But as reality reasserts itself, Effi finds herself facing a far harsher path, navigating life as a single, unemployed mother-to-be in a system stretched thin.

Rising talent Leisa Gwenllian takes the lead performance. She is joined by Tom Rhys Harries, known for his roles in ‘White Lines’ and ‘Suspicion,’ and soon to appear in DC Studios’ upcoming ‘Clayface.’

The screenplay draws from Gary Owen’s acclaimed monodrama Iphigenia in Splott, a modern theatrical powerhouse that has toured extensively across the UK and beyond. Evans reimagines the stage production for the screen.
