Optimum Releasing have sent us a brand new DVD which comes out on general release today, 16th August called Perrier’s Bounty. It has an all-star cast which includes man-of the-moment, Cillian Murphy alongside veteran actors, Brendan Gleeson and Jim Broadbent with Jodie Whittaker and are all helmed by director, Ian Fitzgibbon. Gabriel Byrne also makes an appearance of sorts and appears as the film’s narrator or The Grimm Reaper if you want to be a little more accurate!

Synopsis: An ordinary guy gets himself in an extraordinary amount of trouble in this blend of comedy and action from director Ian Fitzgibbon. Michael McCrea (Cillian Murphy) is a regular guy who isn’t especially good with money, which leads him to borrow some money from Perrier (Brendan Gleeson), a local loan shark and strong-arm man. Unfortunately, Michael isn’t able to pay back the money on schedule, and he quickly learns that Perrier is one man you don’t want angry; now there’s a price on Michael’s head and he needs to pay his debt quickly if he wants to live. Michael accepts a proposal from a small-time hood to do a quick breaking-and-entering job in exchange for part of the loot, but things go very wrong and somehow the neighbour girl Michael is sweet on, Brenda (Jodie Whittaker), ends up shooting someone. Now Michael is on the run from two sets of crooks, has a dead body to deal with, must find an alibi for Brenda, and has to mend fences with his crusty father (Jim Broadbent) before his dad is willing to help.

Perrier’s Bounty is a comedy of sorts with some rather serious subject matter if you’re playing Cillian Murphy’s character, Michael as he spends most of the film worrying that he’s going to lose a knee-cap or two for non-payment of debts while trying to look after his father, Jim who quite hilariously has to stay awake as he’s had a dream telling him the next time he falls asleep and wakes up, he’s going to die! All this alongside his neighbour, Brenda who Michael is deeply in love with even though she’s completely obssed with someone else! All this randomness makes a very fun and original story giving us, ‘Perrier’s Bounty’!

Random is probably the only way to discribe Perrier’s Bounty. The name of the movie starts off to do with money but quickly changes tact after one of Perrier’s (Gleeson) men is killed while collecting the ‘bounty’. The cast was fantastic and you’re pulled into the movie from the very beginning, desperate to figure out a way in which Michael can escape the mess in which he becomes deeper through every scene!

Murphy, Broadbend and Gleeson are excellent in just as they are in pretty much everything they’ve ever been in. It’s great to see that all three Hollywood megastars can still make great, British (or in this case Irish) independent movies and that they’re still actors who can deliver a great script as well as making movies like Inception or Harry PotterIt was also nice to see Bryen appear in the credits although I do hope we get to see him back on the screen in the near future as I think he’s a great actor.

If you’re not a fan on swearing them beware, as I’m not sure a line of dialogue is delivered in this without at least one expletive in it! If you want to see some great acting, a good, original script and a great cast all come together in a Irish gangster comedy then you’re going to like Perrier’s Bounty.
