Meryl-Streep-in-Into-the-WoodsArriving in cinemas at Christmas next year, Disney’s anticipated musical, Into the Woods, started production earlier this money, and the studio has kindly released the first look at Meryl Streep starring as the Witch, the main antagonist in the upcoming movie.

Based on the original musical, which debuted back in 1986 and premiered on Broadway in 1987, the film boasts an all-star cast led by Anna Kendrick as Cinderella, and is very much one of the most anticipated movies of next year.

“Into the Woods” is a modern twist on the beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tales, intertwining the plots of a few choice stories and exploring the consequences of the characters’ wishes and quests. This humorous and heartfelt musical follows the classic tales of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Rapunzel—all tied together by an original story involving a baker and his wife, their wish to begin a family and their interaction with the witch who has put a curse on them.

Starring alongside Kendrick and Streep are the likes of Johnny Depp as the Wolf, Lilla Crawford as Little Red Riding Hood, James Corden and Emily Blunt as the baker and his wife, Chris Pine as Cinderella’s Prince Charming, Christine Baranski as the evil Stepmother, Daniel Huttlestone as Jack and Tracey Ullman as his mother, MacKenzie Mauzy as Rapunzel, and Billy Magnussen as Rapunzel’s Prince.

Rob Marshall (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Chicago) is at the helm, with James Lapine, the original musical’s writer, penning the screenplay, and music and lyrics coming from celebrated composer Stephen Sondheim (West Side Story).

Needless to say, it’s early days yet, but as well as including songs from the original musical, Into the Woods also features an all-new song written for the movie. And just like Les Misérables last year, it would certainly suggest that Disney is eyeing a Best Original Song push at the Oscars at the end of next year.

Into the Woods will be released on December 25th, 2014. With production now officially well underway, here’s to hoping that the first images of Kendrick and co. will soon be released online as well.
