Disney’s long-gestating live-action adaptation of ‘Tangled’ is officially back in motion after being placed on indefinite pause earlier this year. While casting details remain under wraps, sources reveal that Scarlett Johansson is being eyed to play the iconic villain Mother Gothel.
The new film will reimagine the beloved 2010 animated classic, which was itself inspired by the Brothers Grimm fairy tale about Rapunzel, a princess with magically long hair kept hidden away in a secluded tower. In the original story, Rapunzel’s life takes a thrilling turn when she encounters a charming outlaw named Flynn Rider, leading to a sweeping and romantic adventure of freedom and self-discovery.
Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi originally voiced Rapunzel and Flynn in the animated ‘Tangled,’ which became a worldwide hit for Disney, earning over $592 million at the global box office. The film’s success also marked the beginning of Disney’s modern revival of fairy-tale musicals, paving the way for hits like ‘Frozen’ and ‘Moana.’

Michael Gracey, best known for directing ‘The Greatest Showman,’ remains in talks to helm the live-action remake, with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge, I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot) penning the screenplay.
No additional casting has been confirmed, and Disney has yet to set a release window for the film. However, with development back on track, ‘Tangled’ looks set to join the studio’s growing slate of live-action reimaginings, following the likes of ‘The Little Mermaid,’ ‘Aladdin,’ and ‘Beauty and the Beast.’
