Deposit match bonuses are a common type of online casino welcome promotion. The basic idea is straightforward: a player makes a qualifying deposit, and the casino adds bonus funds calculated as a percentage of that amount.

However, the percentage is only part of the offer. A 200% casino bonus does not automatically provide better terms than a 100% bonus. Maximum bonus caps, wagering requirements, eligible games, expiry periods and conversion restrictions can all affect how a promotion works in practice.

Understanding those details makes it easier to compare casino deposit match bonuses without being distracted by the largest headline percentage.

What Is a Casino Deposit Match Bonus?

A casino deposit match bonus adds promotional credit based on a percentage of a qualifying deposit.

For example, consider a promotion advertised as “100% up to £100.” If a player deposits £50:

  • The player provides £50 of their own money.
  • The casino adds £50 in bonus credit.
  • The player therefore has £100 in total across the £50 deposit balance and £50 bonus balance.

A £100 deposit would generate the maximum £100 bonus under that promotion. Depositing £150 would not generate £150 in bonus funds because the advertised bonus is capped at £100.

This distinction between the deposit match percentage and the casino bonus cap is important. The percentage determines how quickly bonus credit is added, while the cap determines the maximum promotional amount available.

What Do 100%, 150% and 200% Deposit Matches Actually Mean?

The easiest way to understand casino bonus percentages is to compare them using the same qualifying deposit.

With a £20 deposit:

  • A 100% casino bonus adds £20, producing £40 in combined funds.
  • A 150% casino bonus adds £30, producing £50 in combined funds.
  • A 200% casino bonus adds £40, producing £60 in combined funds.

The same calculation applies to larger deposits, assuming the maximum bonus has not already been reached.

The totals below represent the combined value of the player’s deposited funds and bonus credit, although UK-licensed operators display these as separate balances.

Deposit 100% Match 150% Match 200% Match
£20 £20 bonus / £40 total £30 bonus / £50 total £40 bonus / £60 total
£50 £50 bonus / £100 total £75 bonus / £125 total £100 bonus / £150 total

A 100% match therefore adds an amount equal to the qualifying deposit. A 150% match adds one and a half times the deposit, while a 200% match adds twice the deposited amount.

That makes the percentage useful, but it should not be considered in isolation. Someone comparing 200% bonus casinos should also look at the maximum bonus available, wagering conditions, eligible games, expiry rules and any restrictions on converting promotional funds before deciding how one offer compares with another.

Why a 200% Bonus Isn’t Automatically Better Than 100%

A higher deposit match percentage means more bonus credit is added for each pound deposited. It does not necessarily mean the promotion offers the largest maximum bonus.

Suppose one casino offers a 200% match capped at £50. A £25 qualifying deposit produces the full £50 bonus, so depositing more does not increase the promotional credit.

Another casino might offer a 100% match capped at £200. The percentage is smaller, but a sufficiently large qualifying deposit could generate as much as £200 in bonus funds.

Neither promotion is universally better. The first reaches its maximum using a smaller deposit, while the second potentially provides more promotional credit overall.

A meaningful comparison therefore depends on four factors: the player’s intended deposit, the maximum casino bonus cap, the wagering requirements and any other conditions attached to the offer.

How Wagering Requirements Change the Comparison

Wagering requirements specify how much qualifying play must take place before promotional funds can generally become withdrawable under the relevant bonus terms.

For UK-licensed gambling operators, this area changed significantly on 19 January 2026. Gambling Commission rules now prevent wagering requirements attached to incentives from exceeding 10 times the bonus amount.

For a simple example, imagine a £20 bonus carrying a 5x wagering requirement. The player would need to make £100 of qualifying wagers to complete that requirement:

£20 bonus × 5 = £100

Completing £100 of wagering does not mean the player will withdraw £100 or retain the original bonus amount. Casino games involve the possibility of losing money during play, and other promotional conditions may also apply.

The calculation method matters as much as the advertised multiple. Two 100% deposit match offers could provide exactly the same bonus credit but work differently because of eligible-game rules, expiry conditions or other restrictions.

Other Bonus Terms That Matter

The match percentage and wagering requirement provide only part of the picture. Several other casino bonus terms can materially affect how a promotion operates.

Maximum Bonus Cap

The maximum bonus sets the upper limit on promotional credit.

A 200% offer capped at £100, for instance, reaches its maximum after a £50 qualifying deposit. A player depositing £100 would still receive no more than £100 in bonus funds.

Compare the monetary cap alongside the percentage rather than assuming the largest percentage creates the largest bonus.

Eligible Games and Game Contribution

Not every casino game necessarily contributes towards bonus requirements in the same way.

Depending on the promotion, certain eligible casino games may contribute fully, while others contribute only partially or are excluded. A promotion can therefore take longer to complete if a player’s preferred games have a reduced contribution rate.

Check the eligible-game and contribution rules before using promotional funds.

Bonus Expiry Period

Many casino promotions specify a period in which the applicable conditions must be completed.

If that period expires before the requirements are satisfied, remaining promotional funds or associated value may be removed according to the offer’s terms.

The expiry date is therefore worth checking before accepting a bonus, particularly when wagering must be completed within a comparatively short period.

Maximum Bonus Conversion or Winnings Cap

Some promotions place a separate limit on how much value generated from promotional funds can ultimately be converted into withdrawable funds.

This is different from the initial bonus cap. An offer can advertise a particular amount of bonus credit while separately limiting conversion under its terms.

Any maximum bonus conversion or winnings-cap rule should therefore be checked independently.

Eligible Payment Methods

A payment method appearing in a casino’s cashier does not necessarily mean it qualifies for every promotion.

Certain deposit methods may be excluded from specific bonuses. Checking the promotional terms before depositing avoids assuming that an otherwise available payment option will activate the advertised match.

A Simple Way to Compare Deposit Match Bonuses

Rather than comparing promotions by headline percentage alone, work through their conditions in the same order each time.

  1. Match percentage: Establish whether the casino offers a 100%, 150%, 200% or another deposit match.
  2. Maximum bonus: Find the monetary cap to see how much bonus credit can actually be added.
  3. Required deposit: Calculate the deposit needed to receive the amount of bonus credit being considered.
  4. Wagering requirements: Check the wagering multiple and what amount it applies to.
  5. Eligible games: Confirm which games count towards completing the conditions and whether contribution rates differ.
  6. Expiry period: Check how much time is available to satisfy the promotional requirements.
  7. Conversion, cashout and other restrictions: Review any remaining terms that could limit how promotional funds are used or converted.

Ultimately, 100%, 150% and 200% describe how much bonus credit is added relative to a qualifying deposit. They do not, by themselves, show how favourable or usable a promotion is. The bonus cap, wagering conditions, game eligibility, expiry period and other restrictions provide the context needed to understand how the complete offer actually works.
