Setting up your dark comedy/action thriller shop in Mexico often seems like cinematic shorthand for a putting your audience through a dangerous journey on the other side of the tracks (or a YUGE wall). Director Nash Edgerton takes many of these tropes and throws in a sterling performance from Selma actor David Oyelowo, a thick streak of dark humour and you’ve got Gringo – Edgerton’s first feature in a decade.
DaniElle DeLaite sat down with David Oyelowo & director Nash Edgerton to talk about creating the right tone for his film, making the characters and action fresh, making Oyelowo’s character of Nigerian background and how the outsider characteristic helps the story.
