From the 2017 Toronto Film Festival we present the press conference highlights for Darkest Hour directed by Joe Wright, and written by Anthony McCarten.

The film stars Lily James, Gary Oldman, Ben Mendelsohn, Stephen Dillane, Kristin Scott Thomas and Samuel West. It sets its scene in the dark days of the Second World War with Oldman an almost unrecognisable presence as Winston Churchill.

During the press conference director Wright talks about ‘not being sure if [he’d] go and see a film about Winston Churchill’, though he admits to laughing and crying when he read the script. The key ingredient was Gary Oldman, and Wright talks about how audiences will discover Churchill’s humour and sparkle that got him through the war.

You can watch the press conference highlights below, Darkest Hour is released in the US on the 22nd of November, and the 12th of January, 2018 in the UK.

Darkest Hour Press Conference

Darkest Hour Movie Synopsis

Within days of becoming Prime Minister of Great Britain, Winston Churchill (Gary Oldman) must face one of his most turbulent and defining trials: exploring a negotiated peace treaty with Nazi Germany, or standing firm to fight for the ideals, liberty and freedom of a nation. As the unstoppable Nazi forces roll across Western Europe and the threat of invasion is imminent, and with an unprepared public, a skeptical King, and his own party plotting against him, Churchill must withstand his darkest hour, rally a nation, and attempt to change the course of world history.
