Creed II throws Michael B. Jordan’s eponymous pugilist back into the ring, this time to face off against the formidable forced of Viktor Drago, the son of Ivan Drago from Rocky IV. With Sylvester Stallone and Tessa Thompson returning with Jordan there’s no better time to catch up with the cast and director to find out how you follow up such a smash hit.

James Kleinmann sat down with Michael B. Jordan, Tessa Thompson, Dolph Lundgren, Florian Munteanu and Director Steve Caple Jr. to talk about the film.

Michael B. Jordan talks about the beautiful violence of boxing, and how that human connection makes for a fascinating film. He talks about wanting to be treated like his character, in this instance a fighter, when he’s on set.

Tessa Thompson has had a fine few years with her stint on Westworld and a sterling turn in Thor: Ragnarok. Here she talks about her excitement at returning to the Creed family, and how she worked with Jordan to create their dynamic, which is central to the film. Thompson talks about moving her character on in this film through the music associated with her character.

A fan of the series from the early days, director Steven Caple Jr. talks about her nerves at being offered the project, and how conversations with the cast helped him find his footing. He also talks about finding out that Dolph Lundgren would be returning as Ivan Drago in the sequel. Together they decided to open up his character and to concentrate on the authenticity of the role. There was also talk about what advice Sylvester Stallone gave him.

Florian Munteanu talks about his relationship with his father and his first fight when he was 12. Lundgren talks about his path into acting and how important Rocky IV was to him, and how it changed his life.
