It was only a matter of time before the big studios took another look at their release schedules and decide to delay and move back some of 2020’s biggest film releases.
Hot on the heels of Warner Bros removing Christopher Nolan’s Tenant from their schedule, now the likes of Disney, Marvel, Paramount and Sony have all made the move to hold on to their blockbusters until the US and the rest of the world aren’t so embroiled in the ongoing spikes of COVID-19.

Here’s a breakdown of the latest films to take a hit.
- Mulan – Initially down for release on March 27, it was pushed to July 24th then August 21st – Now Disney have removed the live-action remake from the schedule completely.
- Avatar Sequels – The first of the sequels was due for a release in December 2021 – Now each sequel has been pushed back a year. Avatar 2” (Dec. 16, 2022), “Avatar 3” (Dec. 20, 2024), “Avatar 4” (Dec. 18, 2026) and “Avatar 5” (Dec. 22, 2028).
- Star Wars – Also pushed back a year, the first of three films will launch on Dec. 22, 2023, and two follow-ups will hit cinemas Dec. 19, 2025, and Dec. 17, 2027.
- The French Dispatch – removed from the schedule.
- Antlers – Postponed until February 19th 2021
- The Last Duel – Moved from Christmas 2020 to October 15th 2021
- Death on the Nile – Kenneth Branagh’s adventure has been pushed back 2 weeks to October 23rd.
- Spider-Man 3 – The Spider-Man: Far From Home sequel has been delayed one month to December 17th 2021
- Black Widow – Moved to November 6th 2020
- The Eternals – Moved to February 12th 2021
- Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings – Moved to May 17th 2021
- Thor: Love and Thunder – Moved to February 11th 2022
- Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness – Moved to March 25th
- A Quiet Place 2 – Moved from September 6th 2020 to April 23rd 2021
- Top Gun: Maverick – Moved from December 23rd 2020 to July 2nd 2021
- Sonic the Hedgehog 2 – Release date of April 8th 2022 set
- Jackass – Moved from July 2021 to September 3th 2021
- Under the Boardwalk – Release date of July 22th 2022 set
- The Tiger’s Apprentice – Moved from February 11th 2022 to February 10th 2023
