Recent comments from Neill Blomkamp (who it has been confirmed will direct a fifth Alien movie) indicated that the District 9 and Chappie helmer will be rewriting franchise continuity by wiping away the events of Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection. As you might imagine, that hasn’t exactly sat very well with a lot of fans!

However, Blomkamp has now gone on record to clarify those comments, making it clear that he won’t necessarily be dismissing the events of the second half of the franchise (even though they pale in comparison to the first two, Alien and Aliens). “I’m not trying to undo ‘Alien 3? or ‘Alien Resurrection.”

So, what is the plan then? “My favourites are the first two movies,” the filmmaker adds. “I want to make a film that’s connected to ‘Alien’ and ‘Aliens.’ That’s my goal.” So, it sounds like it sort of will discount the events of those movies, but in a way which means that what happened in them could still exist. Confusing!

Will Alien 5 take place between the events of Aliens and Alien 3 or could Blomkamp have something even cleverer up his sleeve? We’ll have to wait and see.
