The gaming industry continues to grow at an exponential rate. We can see this clearly in the realm of eSports. Competitive games are now a staple of the industry. The market has gotten so big that even betting sites have had to adapt to the new era. With so many eSports betting guide pages being released to help new bettors, the industry is bound to grow even further.

Within the gaming community, there are certain truths that most gamers understand to be universal. One such dogma is that video games based on films simply don’t work. Just like how most films that adapt a game end up being a sloppy mess, so do most video games based on films end up being rushed at best, and borderline unplayable at worst.

But, is that always the case? In fact, we believe that there have been many licensed games that end up doing a very good job as both a representation of the story they are adapting, and a quality title in its own right. In this article, we are going to go over some of the best video games that are based on films, and talk about why they are different.

GoldenEye 007

Goldeneye

In 1997, Nintendo released a first-person shooter game for their Nintendo 64 platform, based on the adventures of James Bond. We all know James Bond as the suave, charming secret agent, who enjoys the occasional game of roulette or baccarat.

It was that film franchise that inspired GoldenEye 007. Based on the 1995 film of the same name, the player takes control of James Bond, code name: 007. The goal of the game is to prevent a criminal syndicate from using a satellite weapon to destabilize governments throughout the world. So, what made the game such a success, and what sets it apart from other, film-based shooters.

Well, it was likely the dedication of the Nintendo team to creating a good game first, and a film adaptation second. It took two years from the film’s release for the game to come out, which points to the fact that the team behind the game did not rush it. Of course, at this point, the GoldenEye 007 game is 28 years old, so enjoyment may vary depending on your preferences in game. But, for the time, GoldenEye was considered one of the best, and is still fondly remembered by Nintendo fans the world over.

Chronicles of Riddick

Starting with the movie Pitch Black, the “Riddick” film franchise is a controversial one. While it is sometimes considered a cult classic, there are also many who view it as a series of generic action films, set in space. However, even the people who often criticize the film, have made it clear that the game adaptations are some of the best of their era.

Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay is a first-person shooter game, which combines stealth elements to create a unique and engaging experience. It serves as a prequel to the film franchise, but in truth, fans of the game don’t really need to watch the movies at all. Escape from Butcher Bay tells its own, unique and engaging story, which is going to enthrall new and existing fans.

The developers of the game have said that they’ve had two major inspirations for the franchise. One is the film Escape from Alcatraz, and the other is a stealth game series tour de force, Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell. Upon release, the game received instant praise from critics, who at the time called it the best game adapted from a film franchise. Once again, the success of the game is likely owed to the fact that, rather than focusing on adapting a film, the developers just wanted to tell a cool and engaging story.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine

In 2009, 20th Century Fox decided to tell the story of one of Marvel’s most iconic super heroes; the Wolverine. By this point, the X-Men films had already concluded their initial trilogy, and the “superhero” boom was still in its infancy. The standout character in those films was, of course, Logan, portrayed by Hugh Jackman, who did a fantastic job embodying the angry, claw-wielding hero. Needless to say, people were excited for the stand-alone film.

Upon the movie’s release, fans were disappointed. The film underperformed critically and financially. While understandable, overlooking the game inspired by the film was a huge mistake. It is, after all, one of the best hack/slash, action adventure games of its era.

Heavily inspired by the then massively popular God of War franchise, X-Men Origins: Wolverine does an incredible job of actually telling a compelling story of Logan’s past, while simultaneously providing a thrilling, adrenaline-fueled experience, interesting puzzles, and one of the best adaptations of the Wolverine’s healing factor that has ever been done in gaming. Fans who played it were also impressed by the levels of brutality, gore, and blood featured in the game. In fact, the studio had to release two versions, one rated M, and the other PG-13, with the brutality toned all the way down.

For those who overlooked the game, due to the film’s subpar quality, we would heavily encourage you to pick it up. While it does stick to the story, it also diverges greatly, introducing new and compelling characters, and elevating the overall mood and atmosphere. It truly is one of the best video game adaptations of all time.

Honorable Mentions

It wouldn’t do to make a list like this, without mentioning some of the other great games that have spawned from films. Such as the game version of Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Fans of the fantasy genre will not want to skip out on this one, as it not only has pretty impressive graphics for the time, but also great gameplay, and a storyline worth getting invested in.

We also would like to shine a light on the 2024 action-adventure game adapting the Indiana Jones franchise. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle got an overwhelmingly positive response, and was met with incredible sales. Many critics praised its design, and its meaningful story, even hailing it as the end to poor video game adaptations.
