This week, awards season started in earnest as BAFTA announced their traditional BAFTA Breakthrough nominations, celebrating the most promising young British talents starting their careers.

We had the pleasure of chatting to two of this year’s nominees: fresh from her incredible debut turn in Rocks, we chatted to Bukky Bakray about being plucked from her classroom to starring in one of 2020’s most acclaimed films, as well as her aspirations going forward and why the film has touched so many people in the UK and abroad.

We also spoke to Lauren Ridloff, one of the stars of Marvel’s upcoming new film Eternals, in which she stars opposite Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Brian Tyree Henry, and more. She spoke about the nomination, her reaction, working on such a big film, and her hopes for the future of inclusivity in Hollywood.

BAFTA Breakthrough, launched in May 2020, is BAFTA’s flagship global, new talent initiative that showcases and supports the next generation of creative talent in film, games and television. Previously known as Breakthrough Brits, the initiative has been running in the UK since 2013 and in China since 2019, but this year marks the first time the initiative is recognising talent globally across the UK, US, India and China.
