Though renowned primarily for his comedic endeavours, Bill Nighy has turned to his dramatic side in The Limehouse Golem – bringing Inspector Kildare to life in this dark, entertaining Victorian thriller.

The actor, who is not one for long answers (good thing we came prepared) discusses how he approached the role on such cinematic terms, informed by other characters that have adorned the screen in this genre. He also speaks about the quality of Jane Goldman’s script and the meticulous nature of director Juan Carlos Medina.

We also spoke about the lack of comedic space for the actor within this title, and whether he knew much about Dan Leno before getting involved. Finally, he speaks about his next venture The Bookshop – and tells us what unique gifts he was given by director Isabel Coixet after they wrapped.

Synopsis

Victorian London is gripped with fear as a serial killer is on the loose and leaving cryptic messages written in the blood of his victims. With few leads and increasing public pressure, Scotland Yard assigns the case to Inspector Kildare, a seasoned detective who has a sneaking suspicion that he’s being set up to fail. Faced with a long list of suspects, Kildare must rely on help from a witness to stop the murders and bring the maniac to justice.
