Avengers: Infinity War delivered a lot of shocking twists and turns as we not only saw Earth’s Mightiest Heroes lose to Thanos but at least half of our favourite characters ended up turning to dust after the Mad Titan snapped his fingers and wiped out trillions of lives. How the team will recover in order to try and make things right remains to be seen, especially as Avengers 4 is currently shrouded in such a great deal of secrecy.

However, while the plot of the movie is being guarded by Marvel’s formidable team of snipers, we actually know of a number of characters who are confirmed to appear in the sequel thanks to set photos, interviews, and various other pieces of leaked intel.

There are also a lot of heroes and villains who are rumoured to appear in Avengers 4 and we’re going to kick things off by taking a look at them. Needless to say, we think you’ll be surprised by some of the names that pop up here and we may have actually unearthed quite a few details about what’s to come in the movie based on who’s showing up!

The Vision

That’s right, despite his death at the hands of Thanos, comments from Paul Bettany have pointed to the android factoring into Avengers 4 and there’s a chance that Shuri performed enough of that surgery to mean he can be restored even if he is a greyed out, emotionless shell like his comic book counterpart when he joined the West Coast Avengers.

Quicksilver

Quicksilver was gunned down by Ultron in Avengers: Age of Ultron but there have been rumbling that Aaron Taylor-Johnson was spotted on the set of Avengers 4, possibly sharing an embrace with his sister, the Scarlet Witch. How a resurrection could take place isn’t clear unless his powers being tied to the Mind Stone will play some sort of role in that.

Stature

Cassie Lang is still a small child in Ant-Man and The Wasp so what’s the deal with an older version of the character reportedly being cast for Avengers 4? Are we getting some sort of glimpse into her heroic future? Whatever the answer may be, it seems like Scott Lang’s daughter may suit up as Young Avengers member Stature in the anticipated sequel.

Harley

Remember that cute kid from Iron Man 3 who Tony Stark turned to for help? Well, it sounds like an older version of the character will show up in Avengers 4 and that was “confirmed” in a Tweet from IMDb last year. Could he be the next Iron Man if Tony ends up retiring? That may be a stretch but it’s certainly one possibility if he’s returning to the MCU.

Valkyrie

There was no sign of Valkyrie (or Korg) in Avengers: Infinity War and seeing as we’ve since learned that they escaped with the half of the Asgardians Thanos didn’t kill, surely she’ll make some sort of triumphant return in Avengers 4? Nothing has been confirmed but Marvel would be really foolish not to do something with Tessa Thompson here.

Hank Pym

It’s widely believed that we’ll see both Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne show up in Avengers 4 either because the former chooses to make amends with the Stark family or they’re among the dead after Thanos’ “snap decision.” It would definitely be cool to see the original Ant-Man and The Wasp show up in Avengers 4 but don’t expect much more than a cameo.

Gamora

It’s hard to imagine Gamora not being resurrected in Avengers 4, especially as she’s such a big part of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. As of right now, though, she’s very much dead and while rumours and fan theories alike are swirling that her soul is trapped within that Infinity Stone, all we know for sure is Zoe Saldana will indeed be part of reshoots.

So, those are the main characters rumoured to be making their respective presences felt in Avengers 4 but what about the heroes and villains we know will definitely be back?

Iron Man

Well, duh!

Tony Stark may be trapped on Titan but he’s still very much alive and Robert Downey Jr. – rocking a blonder hairstyle than what we’re used to – has been spotted on set. It’s hard to say right now what his role will be here but it looks like his B.A.R.F. tech could come into play in a big way unless that being on set was a misdirect and we’re getting time travel.

Captain America

Steve Rogers had only a very small role in Avengers: Infinity War but despite all those fan theories that Thanos would be responsible for killing him off, he’s still very much alive and shellshocked after seeing his friends die. Set photos have shown him wearing the suit from The Avengers and while it’s possible he’ll don that costume in the present day, it’s doubtful.

Thor

Say what you will about Star-Lord but Thor really messed when he buried that axe in Thanos’ chest rather than his head. Now, he’ll have to carry that guilt into Avengers 4, a movie we know will feature flashbacks/time travel to the events of The Avengers as Chris Hemsworth has been spotted on set in his classic costume with Mjolnir by his side.

The Hulk

Bruce Banner still being around shouldn’t really surprise anyone, especially as Mark Ruffalo has been quoted as saying that Avengers 4 wraps up a three-part story arc for the Jade Giant. Chances are we will see Bruce transform again too as he’s another actor who has been spotted on set, albeit in mo-cap gear and carrying a bindle of all things!

Hawkeye

Despite all the hype surrounding Hawkeye ahead of Avengers: Infinity War’s release, he was nowhere to be seen in the movie. Avengers 4 set photos have pointed to him taking on his comic book persona as Ronin and heading to Japan. Why? Well, he’ll reportedly be tracking down the shape-shifting Skrulls who will debut in Captain Marvel next year.

Black Widow

Natasha is another character who didn’t have the biggest role in Avengers: Infinity War. Chances are she’ll be attempting to track Hawkeye down in this fourth instalment and there has to be a reason Marvel has kept all the original Avengers on the board for the highly anticipated sequel, so don’t be surprised if she ends up playing a significant role here.

Ant-Man and The Wasp

The only mention of Scott Lang in Avengers: Infinity War came when it was revealed that he’d been placed under house arrest. Paul Rudd, however, has been spotted on set suited up alongside Tony Stark in those apparent B.A.R.F. sequences while Evangeline Lilly has confirmed that The Wasp will have a part to play which promises to be a lot of fun.

Captain Marvel

At the end of Avengers: Infinity War, we saw Nick Fury use a pager of some sort to send a distress signal to Carol Danvers, a character we’ll meet for the first time in next March’s Captain Marvel. However, Fury’s actions will clearly facilitate her return to Earth in the present day and that’s something bound to help turn the tide against the Mad Titan.

Loki

The God of Mischief quite clearly died at the hands of Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War but Loki has escaped death many times. This time seems permanent, though, so why are we so sure that he’ll return? Well, in those aforementioned flashbacks, he’s been spotted being led away by Thor and S.H.I.E.L.D. agents shortly after his defeat in The Avengers.

War Machine

War Machine was among the living after Thanos snapped his fingers and seeing as he’s on good terms with Steve, there’s a chance he’ll be the one to help him and Tony reunite. He’s not the only Iron Man cast member confirmed for Avengers 4, though, as Pepper Potts and Happy Hogan will also appear. Rumour has it that she and Tony are expecting a baby!

Rocket

Poor Rocket is currently the only surviving member of the Guardians of the Galaxy so he’ll have to become an Avenger in this sequel if he hopes to bring his friends back. Seeing him interact with Thor and Bucky was a great deal of fun and the reaction the likes of Iron Man and Captain America ultimately have to the character will no doubt be priceless.

Nebula

Nebula is also trapped on Titan alongside Tony Stark, so who knows how these two are going to get on! They’ll need to work together to get back to Earth, though, and Karen Gilman has previously teased the possibility that Nebula will have a very important role to play here, something fans of the comic books will be well aware was also the case there.

Thanos

The Mad Titan’s arm may have been left damaged from using the Infinity Gauntlet and he may have had an axe put through his chest but Thanos is still alive and pleased that he managed to fulfill his promise of wiping out half of all known life in the universe. Josh Brolin (and that tag at the end of the movie) confirmed that Thanos will return, so stay tuned!

So, there you have it. These are all the rumoured and confirmed characters we’re expecting to see in Avengers 4. Marvel will surely add other names in the coming months and we’ll probably be surprised by some we aren’t expecting if Infinity War was any indication. Which of these heroes and villains are you most excited to see in the movie?
